Dilemma 1 - Curriculum
In an effort to implement a math instructional plan that effectively meets the needs of the children that populate our school, a new math curriculum for grades K - 8th was adopted. The goal is to provide resources that are fluent and offers coherency and would help raise students' math scores. At the same time, C. The dilemma I face is how do I support both causes without overwhelming the teachers? How do I incorporate STEM into the new math curriculum in an authentic way? How much support should be given to the new math curriculum and how much support should be given to STEM integration?
Dilemma 2 - Assessment
As our teachers become more involved in engaging their students in problem based learning and hands on activities, they will not always be able to assess their students in some of the traditional ways such as administering a multiple choice test, or a true or false test or a test requiring short answers. In general, teachers will still have to assess their students learning and determine if students can apply the knowledge and skills learned in authentic situations. The dilemma I face is how will I get teachers to implement authentic student assessments? Since there has been a great controversy as to what is authentic student work, how can I help teachers understand what is an authentic student assessment? More questions that I will consider is what do teachers need to know to shift their mindsets about assessments? What is an authentic assessment and why is this important?
